About

"Breathing for Singers" Lesson 2 Overview: Breathing is the engine behind every great vocal performance. In Lesson 2, we go deeper into the mechanics of breath support, explore the role of the diaphragm, learn to distinguish between airy and supported tone, and practice two signature exercises: Vocal Pants and Sound Flash. By the end of this lesson, you will have the foundational tools to sing with greater power, control, and longevity. 1. Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: ● Understand the anatomy and function of the diaphragm in singing ● Identify the difference between airy tone and solid, supported tone ● Practice proper posture for optimal breath flow ● Execute the Vocal Pants exercise with correct technique ● Execute the Sound Flash exercise with proper breath support 2. The Diaphragm Explained The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. When you inhale, it contracts and flattens downward, creating space for the lungs to expand with air. When you exhale, it relaxes and rises, pushing air upward through the vocal folds where sound is produced. In singing, we engage the diaphragm actively to control airflow, sustain tone across long phrases, and generate vocal power without strain. Think of it as your vocal engine — the more intentionally you engage it, the more control you have over your sound.
